Lingual orthodontics or dental back orthodontics

What is lingual orthodontics?

The term “lingual” means linguistic or related to language. Unlike conventional orthodontics where brackets are placed on the teeth, lingual braces are placed on the inner surfaces of the teeth (closer to the tongue). That is why it is also called back or lingual orthodontics. Since in lingual orthodontics, braces are not visible from the outside and from a close distance, this method in the group Invisible orthodontics is placed

Lingual orthodontic procedure

If you are an adult and don’t want your braces to be seen due to beauty, you are a good candidate for this procedure. In the following, we refer to the method of performing lingual orthodontics:

  • First step: After the initial visit, the complete examination of the patient’s problem, and the determination of the treatment method, the orthodontist prepares a mold of the patient’s teeth for the use of lingual braces.
  • Second step: The prepared template is sent to the dental laboratory. Then the brace design is done using CAD/CAM software and the main prototyping technology is used for this purpose.
  • Third step: Next, the necessary wires are made and bent with robotic technology. This process takes about 6 weeks. After this period, the orthodontic braces behind the teeth are attached to the teeth using a precise process. After this, it is necessary for the patient to meet the dentist regularly to monitor the improvement process of the patient’s teeth. The duration of this method is between 18 and 36 months.
  • Fourth stage: The final stage after the treatment is completed, a mold is given to the patient, which he uses for a while according to the doctor’s order, and its purpose is to keep the teeth in the right position.

History of dental orthodontics

When back orthodontics was introduced in 1970, some patients and doctors thought it was a perfect and complete system and had high expectations for its treatment results. Over time, reports of disappointing results and high costs of this method were published, which caused much excitement to turn to despair and the trend towards this system gradually declined, so that by the late 1980s the number of doctors using this technique decreased.

Advantages of lingual orthodontics

  • The first advantage is the invisible state of braces.
  • The advantages and capabilities of lingual orthodontics are much greater for making complex changes in the condition of the teeth, such as correcting the rotation of the teeth, changing the height of the teeth, and closing the space between the teeth.
  • If a color change occurs in these brackets if the patient fails to observe oral and dental hygiene, the stains will be inside the teeth and will not be visible to others.

Disadvantages of lingual orthodontics

  • Installing brackets in this method behind the teeth is more difficult and each orthodontic session requires more time than normal orthodontics.
  • It may take a few weeks for the patient to get used to the brackets near their tongue.
  • Brackets and wires usually cause an uneven feeling that can affect a person’s speaking status for a certain period of time.
  • Lingual braces are more difficult to clean.
  • In fact, if you have periodontal problems (gum disease), braces may exacerbate the condition.
  • It is not possible to use lingual braces for patients whose teeth are short. Anyway, the orthodontist can determine the suitability of lingual orthodontics for the specific conditions of the patient’s teeth during the meeting with him by performing the necessary examinations.
  • Since the distance between the teeth is smaller in their inner area, the installation of lingual braces requires the use of smaller and lighter wires. These conditions can increase the patient’s treatment time compared to conventional orthodontics.
