What is orthodontic bonding? Bonding steps

What is orthodontic bonding?

Orthodontics is used to treat jaws or teeth that are not in the right place. In this method, by placing braces and wiring between the teeth, the patient’s jaw and teeth problems are solved. to the process of attaching the brace to the teeth in the procedure Fixed orthodonticsIt is called orthodontic bonding. Brace consists of two parts, bracket and wire. The bracket is the square metal pieces that are placed on the tooth and finally the wire is connected to these pieces. In the past, a band or ring that was wrapped around the tooth was used for orthodontics. This method was not liked by customers in terms of aesthetics, so it became obsolete over time. Orthodontic treatment for two groups, one for teeth correction and the other for treatment Types of jaw abnormalities It is prescribed. The treatment method of each group requires its own device according to the different type of treatment.

How to perform orthodontic bonding

In orthodontic bonding, multi-layer adhesive with thin thickness is used. This glue should completely ensure the adhesion of the brace to the tooth. Among the types of bonding methods, two indirect and direct methods can be mentioned. This process is done by light or chemicals. The acceptable and suitable adhesion level of braces and brackets depends on the dentist’s mastery and experience. In the following, we will explain the mentioned two methods in detail:

  • Indirect orthodontic bonding

In this method, a plaster model is used, and the brackets are installed in a suitable place on this plaster model, and after preparation, the braces are transferred to the patient’s mouth and attached to the teeth. In this method, by reducing the time required to attach the brackets individually on the teeth, as well as reducing the time the patient’s mouth remains open using retractors, the patient feels more comfortable. On the other hand, the number of visits to deal with orthodontics may increase.

  • Direct orthodontic bonding

In this method, orthodontic brackets are glued directly on each patient’s teeth. The advantage of using direct bonding is that the location of the brackets is precisely determined according to the position of the tooth root and its crown. Of course, this requires that the patient’s mouth be kept open for a long time by means of a retractor. This issue causes the patient’s resentment, but after removing it, the discomfort and dryness that has arisen disappears immediately.

Orthodontic bonding procedures

The different stages of bonding are as follows:

  • Polishing teeth with paste without special taste
  • Drying the teeth using a retractor to separate the lips from the teeth
  • Removing excess layers on the surface of the tooth using an acid conditioner gel
  • Brushing the teeth to remove the gel
  • Placing the primer on the surface of the teeth
  • Dip the back surface of the brace with orthodontic bonding glue
  • Placing a brace on the surface of the teeth
  • Bracket placement and adjustment
  • Removing the remaining bonding glue
  • Stabilization of the adhesive by light or chemicals
  • Removing the retractor and installing wires

Orthodontic bonding is completely painless. But after the mentioned steps, the patient’s mouth becomes a little dry. But with washing and doctor’s recommendations, this problem will improve quickly. It can be said that bonding does not have lasting effects.

Duration of orthodontic bonding

This process is usually done during a session and a 20-minute period. In general, placing and adjusting the brackets on the surface of the teeth takes more time than other steps. Another factor affecting the duration of orthodontic bonding is the use of light or chemicals to harden the adhesive. Using chemicals takes longer than light. If light is used, plasma lights tighten each bracket in less time than LED lights. Also, the accuracy and expertise of the dentist also affects the time of this process.

Rebonding of loose brackets

If the brackets installed on the surface of the patient’s teeth loosen or come off completely, there is nothing to worry about. By returning to the orthodontic clinic, you can reinstall the damaged units. In these cases, we face two situations: either the bracket has not changed its shape and can be reinstalled, or the bracket is damaged or bent, in which case it should be replaced and a new bracket should be used. For this purpose, first the adhesives of the previous bracket are scraped from the tooth, then the other steps of replacing the new bracket (exactly like its initial installation) are done.

Orthodontic debonding

The act of removing orthodontic bonding is called de-bonding and it takes place after the end of orthodontic treatment. It should be noted that doing this work, like bonding, should be done under the supervision of an orthodontic specialist with high precision and skill, otherwise it will cause serious damage to the tooth or tooth enamel.

The steps of orthodontic debonding

  • There are various methods for debonding according to the type of brackets. If the brackets are metal, the bracket is separated from the tooth by hand pressure at a specific angle. But if ceramic brackets are used, they are separated from the teeth by laser heat.
  • Finally, the remaining bonding glue is removed and shaved using special dental tools. This step takes 5 to 10 minutes and requires high precision so as not to damage the tooth enamel. If your teeth are sensitive, you may feel some discomfort.

Common questions about orthodontic bonding and debonding

  • Does bonding and debonding hurt?

After orthodontic bonding (installation of brackets on the teeth), pain is normal and disappears within a few days with the use of painkillers. After the debonding operation (removal of brackets), you will have some pain, but it is less painful than the installation of brackets.
